St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City
C: St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City
This photo of St. Peter's Basilica was a photo I took in 2008 during my trip to Europe. This Late Renaissance church was designed by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini. This great work of architecture is one of the most significant buildings in Rome, and known globally. Besides that, St. Peter's Basilica is one of the largest churches in the world. As seen in global media mass, this building is significant to many pilgrimage and religious related events. Being one of the holiest Catholic sites, this Renaissance design influenced church was constructed using high quality marble and domes entirely changed the architecture of churches around the world. Visiting one of the largest churches in the world changed the way I looked at other churches I have been in other places around the world. The breathtaking sculptures, colours, shapes on the ceiling of this church was amazing and the history behind the church makes it a significant to the Christian life.
The Petronas Twin Towers, A Great Work of Architecture
The Petronas Twin Towers, located in the city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is an amazing work of architecture. Designed by Argentine-American architect Cesar Pelli, the Twin Towers was considered the tallest building in the world from 1998-2004. These towers were post modern age influenced, built on the world's deepest foundations, which included 104 concrete piles, ranging from 60 to 114 metres. The 88-floor towers were constructed based on Islamic patterns, using metals and glass. The cross section of these towers were based on the Rub el Hizb, albeit with circular sectors to meet office space requirements. These towers are currently office spaces for the Petronas company, and below the towers stands the Suria KLCC Shopping Mall, and the KLCC Park, opened to the public, visited by tourists from all around the world. This building is definitely a symbol of Malaysia and I grew up watching the towers being constructed.
My Creative Work
Architectural Project for Design & Technology HSC
This was an architectural project based on a boarding house in The Scots College, known as the Fairfax House. This project was done in Year 11 for my Design & Technology course. The project was aimed to overcome several problems in the boarding house I was living in The Scots College. The boarding house was completely redesigned with much more spacial interior, more rooms, bigger communal showers and student lounge. This project was completed in 3 months, which included the entire documented process. A survey was conducted amongst all the boarding students and factors were considered before the design of the new Fairfax House. My ability to hand draw and foam cutting skills helped me through the construction of the final model. The architectural design was to overcome several issues with the current boarding house and my final design successfully fulfilled each criteria that had to be improved.
